About the Story:
After catching her husband in the arms of another woman Paisley feels like nothing can help her climb out of the depressing hole that had become her life. With the divorce pending, her home up or sale and her career on hold she hopes the opportunity to house sit in the coastal town of Topsail Island will bring on the inspiration she is searching for.
After leaving his home in Tennessee for the white beaches of North Carolina Jake finds more than the fresh start he was looking for. His new upstairs neighbor had sparked more than his interest, but their pasts keep threatening to dampen their futures.
Can two lost souls find love in Topsail Island, North Carolina? Or will the ghost of loves lost ruin their second chances at true love?
Tell me about yourself. What’s a day in your life like? Where to start?
Okay so I get up every morning to the shrill beep-beep of the alarm at six am then fight to get my two daughters ready and off to school. Where we live there is no bus route so I take them every morning, and yes I am the mom that goes to school full on PJ’s. That starts my six hours of me time, to write, clean or just drool over the boys of Supernatural in a rerun marathon J After I have exhausted all of my dvr’d dream hunks or ran short of new words for my latest WIP I do the mommy things all over again and wait on the hubby to get home to spoil him with frozen pizza and over caffeinated kids.
When you were a child, what was your dream occupation?
Ironically enough me and my best friend wrote short stories when we were teenagers, I never thought anything about being a writer then, it was her dream I was just her crit partner. She’s now a Physical Fitness Trainer and I’m the writer.
Describe an incident in your life that’s helped mold you into the person you are today.
Okay I know this is cheesy but I have to choose the day I met my husband. I was 16, volunteering with Special Olympics and this amazing set of legs, with the most muscular calves I had ever seen came walking down the bleachers and I was hooked. Almost twenty years later we are still going strong. Together we have made it through the birth of two children, losing everything we owe to a house fire, multiple job changes and thirteen years of marriage. Without that man I would still be living in my parent’s attic. lol
Who are your favorite authors?
This could be a long list. My likes have changed considerably over the years. I used to be a NY junkie and now I am all about the small press authors. I think once your book has a series of twenty or more books and has hit every best sellers list the passion falls out of the words. New authors and small press writers put their heart and souls into their books and it shows. Honestly though if it has words I will read it.
What are you passionate about?
My family is my greatest passion, they will always come first but my writing is a very close second.
What would I find in your couch cushions?
The lost portal to Narnia! Probably crayons, gold fish crackers and a sock.
What’s your biggest fear?
Spiders! I hate those little eight legged freaks! (Oh and bad movies made about spiders)
It’s 10:00 on a Friday night. Where are you?
Curled up in bed reading a book or watching a movie with my kids is a normal Friday night for me. But if we have a sitter, we enjoy sushi night or dinner with friends.
What sets you apart from other writers?
I think what sets me apart isn’t found in my writing, it’s the fact that I have no background in writing. I worked as an EKG tech in a trauma center before having babies and then took eight years off playing with Barney and bear in the big blue house. I was the kid who failed ninth grade English because I refused to read and do reports on the books my teacher wanted me to read. There was a lack of paranormal creatures and romance.
We’re in a bar and I’m buying you a drink. What’ll it be? I don’t really drink much but when I do it’s a margarita on the rocks or rum and pineapple juice. I know I’m a lightweight.
What are you currently reading?
Edits J I just finished edits for Passionate Tides and now I am working on edits for my summer release A Bitter Reunion, A Clearwater Novella. Best advice I ever received was from Kim Harrison she said “write what you like to read, because you will read it eighteen times before you’re done”. She failed ninth grade English too.
Spring Break is in two weeks and I am saving the Patricia Briggs, Mercy novel for my trip.
Where did the idea for your novel come from?
I was lying in my bed last winter, cuddled up with both kids and the dog watching the hubby play Assassins Creed while I was on my laptop booking our summer vacation. I was looking at beach pictures and all of a sudden the plot just came to me. I wrote the first draft over the next two days.
Do you have advice for aspiring writers?
Read, and read a lot! There is no study guide or cheat sheet for writing a good book but you can study other writers and learn more than any college class can teach you. I was asked today “How hard is it to write a good book” Its only as hard as you make it, if you enjoy it and love what your writing it will not feel like work at all. Now edits that’s a different story J
What is the toughest criticism you’ve received as an author?
That my story was “predictable” That word haunts me! I hope that the changes I made since that review made it less so and I hope to never see that word again!
What does your main character think about you? Would he or she want to hang around you as their author?
Except for being a doormat for ten years of marriage, there is a lot of me in Paisley. I married my high school sweetheart and at the time I wrote this I was still hoping to be published. It’s a case of life imitating art.
Who would play the starring role(s) if your book became a movie?
No skinny chicks, someone with curves that could say “Take me now” and be believable. As for men, I am a huge believer that we need more movies with Chris Hemsworth half naked! I don’t know if he fits Jake but any time you can get Thor wet on the beach is a good thing.
If you had to choose one…which song would sum up your story?
Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. That song ran through my head the entire time I was writing.
Would you like to say anything to your readers / fans?
Last year I got the chance to fulfill my dream of being published; it wasn’t long until my book was back in my hands due to unforeseen circumstances. It took a few months to get back into the groove and get my confidence back up but I did it. I spend some time rewriting and adding to Passionate Tides and I think it’s a better book for it.
Where link-wise can your readers / fans stalk you?
www.jnjohnsonauthor.com or find me on Face Book at www.facebook.com/authorjnjohnson or follow the news of upcoming releases for the Clearwater Series at www.sunshinepressbooks.com. Along with fellow Sunshine author Marissa Dobson we are re-launching the Clearwater Series this summer with some amazing contest and the chance to win an iPad3.
As a writer, it can be difficult to find enough time in the day to get everything done. Would you like to share your favorite ‘quick and easy’ recipe?
Make the hubby pick up dinner on his way home from work. No I’m just kidding. I multitask on a daily basis. I do all of my writing on one laptop and I take it everywhere with me. If I know I am going to have a long wait I will break it out and prop it up on the arm rest of my truck and write.

I want to thank everyone who supported me and gave me push I needed to get back in the game. My RL family and my FB family have been amazing on this journey, I couldn’t have done it without you.
I, for one, am proud of you! Congratulations on getting yourself back out there, J.N. Johnson! I wish you much success with Passionate Tides and look forward to hosting you again in the future! <3
