It has been an amazing experience; it has challenged me like nothing else and made me a better all-around person because of it. I still have many more goals I would love to achieve some day but to this point I have done a few wonderful things with it that I am very grateful for.
What’s your favorite book and why?
I can’t really say I have one favorite book, I have a favorite type of book and that is autobiographies. I read about those who went through tough times to rise to the top and what they were thinking about during their journey. I find books like this very inspirational.
Which song currently sums up your life?
Don't Stop Believin' – Journey…..never give up on your dreams, follow your heart and work hard to make things happen. This song title sums up John Quinlan’s life as I have always felt I had to work twice as hard as the next guy to get anything as I was never blessed with God given talent. Through hard work was the only way I knew I would ever do anything in this life.
Tell me what it was like learning you landed your first romance novel cover.
I was honored; it is something I would never take for granted. I have so much respect for Ann Mayburn for believing in me. It is something nobody can take away from me, my little children can see their dad on book covers is really something to me.
What’s challenging and rewarding about your line of work?
I am my own worst enemy so getting over the, “am I good enough for this” type thing is the biggest challenge because it is an industry driven by ones appearance. The reward is after you do something you didn’t think you could do and you take a step back and say, “I really did this” like a cover is the most rewarding thing in this business.
What would you like to say to your fans?
I am humbled with the thought of even one fan, I have so much appreciation for all those who have been so very nice to me over the years that I can’t put it all into this interview as we would be here for hours. I have had people send me autograph requests and I am just like, “thank you so much” as I see myself as John…..the regular guy from Boston, Massachusetts.
There is nothing crazy about me, ha ha ha, I have 3 beautiful little children who are my world. Being a dad comes first because of the love I feel when I am with them. I could never imagine not having that. But I am a fitness minded person having competed as a model and athlete staying healthy is a big part of my life. I always find the time to fit in a workout as this is my link to my youth. I still mentally feel like I am 21 so living the lifestyle that I do will always give me the best chance to stay close to that.
What are your hobbies?
I wouldn’t really say I have a hobby but I have a couple of passions. Being a good dad is the first. It sounds kind of tacky but I still look at my 3 children and think to myself, “How did I help create such beautiful little people?” It is a great feeling being there for them. The 2nd is fitness; I will always enjoy training even when I retire from competing it is like brushing my teeth.
What would we find in your couch cushions?
Tons of Trident gum wrappers, I have been competing over the past few months and have been on a very strict diet for quite some time and Trident sugarless gum has been my desert….my sweet tooth gets satisfied on Trident original, ha ha ha, sad isn’t it. :)
A great man once told me for every success he has had 100 failures, in the model business rejections are common place. Never give up and keep doing positive things that will help get you closer to your goals and when you least expect it a success will fall right into your lap and it is a great feeling when it finally happens.
Can you share an entertaining or embarrassing story you’ve encountered through being a model?
When I am dieting to get ready for a shoot I drink lots of water to flush out my system and stay clean, well one day I was going to meet this lady who was a very important person in the business. I had to park in a multiple level parking garage across from her office. As I got out of my car I really had to “pee” and from all the water I drank I could barely walk I had to go so bad. So right between 2 parked cars I “leaked” all over the place. Now I was ready to make my great 1st impression, walked across the street and into her office. Direct eye contact, shook her hand and she smiled back at me and then says, “Why is the entire front of your pants soaking wet?” Yeah, I went all over myself and didn’t even realize it. My heart was racing and I was quick though, “I spilled my gallon of water on myself by accident.” She laughed and said she drinks lots of water also. Very close to disaster there, ha ha ha!
Who do you look up to and/or admire?
I would have to say my grandfather Bill Hafner. If I could be half the man he is I will have truly achieved greatness in this life. Married to my grandmother for over 60 years when she passed and he never used foul language and was always the nicest person to everybody he ever met. A great role model, he was the perfect father to my mother, my aunt and uncle. He is 91 years old right now, God Bless him!
I wouldn’t let a fine lady such as yourself buy me a drink; I would buy one for you. A Coors Light for me and for you I’m thinking a Cosmopolitan :)
What sets you apart from other models?
People have told me I am very unique in the sense that I have modeled in numerous genres of modeling not just one. I have done fashion, fitness, editorial, art and sports. I used to laugh back in the day, “how many fashion models can bench press 400lbs.?” Too funny!!!!!
